Wickham Street, Newstead

Located on the third level of an office building and enjoying spectacular views overlooking Brisbane’s central business district, the focus of Newstead was to embrace the city surrounds and provide a different perspective to the children of the centre.

The biggest challenge was creating an outdoor environment within a commercial indoor office building that provided all the necessary features to physically challenge children whilst providing the tactile and sensory experiences of nature. 

This was achieved by setting the façade at either ends of the building back within the tenancy, creating an outdoor area of over 800m2 that’s protected from the heat of the Queensland sun ventilated by prevailing breezes.  

Fragrant and tactile plants were carefully selected to survive within the indirect sunlight of the balconies and provide exciting opportunities for children to explore and investigate nature within the setting of a commercial office building.
